This is a wonderful dessert set of 16 vintage pieces of primitive red ware Talavera hand thrown pottery made in Mexico. They all have lovely hand painted folk art patterns in various designs (there are some duplicates). The background glaze is cream with the painting done is terri cota, green, mustard, blue and black. The set consists of: one footed cake place or dish, 8 X 4 (chip on rim about 7/8" X 3/8"); five, 8" cake plates ( three have the same design) ; five, 5 3/8" plates that I feel are sauces for the cups. They do not have indents in the middle; four cups (probably for the hot chocolate, famous in Mexico) 2 1/5" X 2 3/4" plus handles; and a creamer 2 1/2' X 3 3/8 plus handle (marked Mexico 252). Other than the larger chip on the cake stand, the rest of the pieces have a few small chips and a few have minor crazing. There are no cracks. This pottery was made with faults in the glaze (pops) which add to it's charm. Overall they are in very good condition. Some of the pieces have an impressed, "Made in Mexico" and others are written with a glaze. This pottery may not be lead free and safe to use but is very scarce and collectible and lovely for decorating a southwestern home.
Mexican Hot Chocolate 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
Melt the chocolate in the top of a double boiler. In a separate heavy saucepan heat the milk and cream on low until hot but not bubbling. When the milk mixture is hot add 3 tablespoons of it to the chocolate and mix well. Blend in the rest of the milk mixture, the sugar, and the cinnamon. In a small bowl beat the eggs and vanilla. Add a tablespoon of the chocolate mixture to the eggs and beat well. Slowly stir the egg mixture into the chocolate. Whisk the hot chocolate briskly in the double boiler for 3 minutes, then serve immediately. 8 servings[!material:pottery!] |
