This is an antique brass stencil used for marking shipping crates, marked New York Stencil Works 87 Massaust, NY, (star trademark) and 1868 and 1871 patent dates. It includes the letters of the alphabet and numbers 0-9 as well as No, 1$, etc. There is a guard, held in the middle with a wooden knob (painted black), that swivels to protect each symbol for stenciling. This was often used with hot tar or ink, that has left a nice red patina on the brass. There is also remains of the blacking and some bends in the brass. A very early tool, from the Aiken estate, very pretty to hang. Shipping: 2 lbs. I need your zip code or country for a quote. Can combine shipping. Email me or see my store terms for more information. |
