 | | | Draper Maynard Bat Baseball Lucky Dog Pro Model c.1915 to 1919
ITEM DESCRIPTION Extremely rare c.1915-1919 Draper & Maynard baseball bat - professional model featuring the vintage Lucky Dog logo. The bat is a model 66 and is a No. 100 - which denotes this bat as the company's top-of-the-line professional model. The center brand features the Lucky Dog logo, along with the Made In U.S.A. and Draper-Maynard stampings. This baseball bat is 34 inches in length and weighs approximately 34.2 ounces - and displays very well (see photos). The bat is not cracked and shows light game use and has 2 manufacturer plugs in upper handle (common for this brand). All of the manufacturer's stampings are extremely visible and the bat is beautiful with a perfect knob. It is very uncommon to find this model bat in this type of condition and display value, especially from this early era - a great bat investment. The Draper & Maynard - Lucky Dog baseball bat was used by professional baseball teams and players from approximately 1900 -1937 and famous player and hall of famer Johnny Evers became an endorser of Draper & Maynard products around 1917 during his years with the Boston Braves. Draper-Maynard Company, Plymouth, NH In the early 1900’s the Draper and Maynard Company was a major sporting goods supplier. Professional teams relied on the Draper and Maynard Company to supply them with high quality baseball equipment. To give the batter a little extra luck, bats sported the image of founder Jason Maynard’s dog nickname the “Lucky Dog”. The company started in 1881 with the production of gloves, an industry which was already well established in the Ashland-Plymouth area. Just one year later, the firm became a pioneer in the manufacture of baseball gloves when it produced a padded model at the suggestion of a baseball player. It is said to be the first company to design gloves for specific fielding positions. Upon moving to a new factory in Plymouth in 1900, the Draper-Maynard Company became a major supplier of baseball equipment for professional teams. A new trademark was soon adopted, depicting Maynard's bird dog, Nick (the "Lucky Dog"). Production of baseball bats, glove and equipment reached a peak in the 1920s, when the company claimed that over 90% of major league players used Draper-Maynard gloves. The firm supplied all types of baseball products, including uniforms. An increasing variety of sporting goods was offered in the 1930s, but the business closed in Plymouth in 1937.
