Spacing 36 to 48 inches. Spread 2 to 4 feet Exposure sun to partial shade.

Foliage grown for foliage, evergreen, herbaceous.

Propagate by division, rizomes, tubers, corms or bulbs, including offsets. From seed stratify if sowing indoors. Seed collecting allow seedheads to dry on plants; remove and collect seeds.

General culture: Grow in wet, boggy soils in full sun to partial shade. Best in part shade. Grow in containers at the margins of water gardens, pools, or ponds.

In USDA zones 9 and 10, these plants are grown outside year-round and will freely self-seed in optimum growing conditions. Characteristics: Native to Africa, papyrus is a tall, clump-forming, tender perennial sedge that in frost free areas can grow up to15 feet, but normally not more than 8 feet.

The plant has a grass-like clump of triangular green stems that rise up from thick, woody rizomes. Each stem is topped by an umbellate inflorescence of 100+ narrow arching thread-like rays from 4 to 12 inches in length. There are light green yellow/white flower clusters will appear at the end of the rays. The flowers then give way to brown, nut-like fruits. In ancient Egypt, the stems of this plant were used to make a paper-like writing material called papyrus.
