A landmark study of criminality, focusing on the social conditions that produce crime and the types of practical reforms that might reduce crime rates. Interesting because this was a notion born out of science and statistics, a complete about-face from more traditional views of crime as a moral failing. Cities in particular were just starting to get their arms around this idea that crime could be reduced not through punishment (which was generally ineffective), but by ameliorating the conditions that led to crime in the first place.
