Early American Woman's Religious Journal & Letters: Facing Early Death

Writings of Miss Fanny Woodbury, Who Died at Beverly November 15, 1814 Aged 23 Years. Boston. Samuel T. Armstrong. 1815. 2nd edition, 288 pages. Full leather binding, with leather spine label. Good plus: worn along edges and hinges and well scuffed. Two corners worn through board. Pages moderately foxed, three pages with lower corner creased. Binding and text block completely intact and well bound, all pages present (fully collated).

Letters and journal entries dating from 1807 to1814. Nice example of an early American journal, of interest to collectors of women’s writings or American religious writing. Was apparently quite popular at the time, perhaps because people tended to die young and found some consolation in Fanny’s writing, which demonstrates an unwavering religious faith in the face of her expected early death.

Fanny was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Beverly, MA. Her writings were edited into a book after her death by the Reverend Joseph Emerson, her personal mentor and pastor of the Third Congregational Church. “It had been his delight for a year or two…to impart instruction to one of the most vigorous youthful minds that have been found in our female circles She was still more distinguished for the fervor of her piety and the very practical cast of all her views, deep as they were on the doctrines of religion.” (Life of Rev. Joseph Emerson)
