The Story of Rhodesia’s Exclusion from the 1968 Mexico City Olympics By the Coach of Rhodesia’s Olympic Track and Field Team, SIGNED Cheffers, John. A Wilderness of Spite or Rhodesia Denied. New York: Vantage Press. 1972. Photographs by David Paynter. 170 pages and 8 1/4" x 5 1/2". First edition, SIGNED and inscribed by author. Fine/VG+: Light green buckram with gilt spine titling, clean tight and bright. White dj lightly soiled, in protective mylar. Australian John Cheffers was appointed coach of Rhodesia’s Olympic Track and Field Team for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics (19th Olympiad). This book recounts his experiences coaching and preparing his team, only in the end to see Rhodesia barred from participating in the Olympics, ostensibly because of its apartheid regime, although Cheffers argues that Britain used its influence to keep Rhodesia out as punishment for the little country’s rebellion from the British Commonwealth in 1965. Those ultimately punished, of course, were the athletes, pawns in an international game. (Note: Rhodesia became Zimbabwe in 1980.) The foreword to the book notes that its usefulness “will be recognized by those concerned with problems of racism in sport, of politics in sport, of the sociology of coaching, and of sport in international perspective.” Unusual Olympics memorabilia!
