T. E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS: 1938 LIMITED AND SIGNED FIRST EDITION IN SLIPCASE Hart, Liddell and Graves, Robert. T E Lawrence to His Biographers. New York: Doubleday and Doran, 1938. Two volumes in slipcase, each volume signed by its respective author, 233 and 187 pages. First edition, this copy #224 of only 500 printed for the United States (500 were also printed for the UK). Gray linen boards with maroon and gold detail to spine, front cover blindstamped, top-edge gilt, cream laid paper, frontis. illus. of Lawrence in both volumes. 9.5” x 6.5”.Books near fine, browning along front and back interior gutters (from the spine glue used), and the Liddel Hart volume has a very slight spine roll. Very clean, bright, and well bound. Books lack dustjackets but are housed in the scarce slipcase, which is covered in gray and cream paper. Usually absent or much worn, the slipcase here is exceptionally nice: solid and square, showing only a bit of wear at laid-on paper corners and a few surface marks. Issued three years after Lawrence’s death, the two volumes, written separately by Hart and Graves, provide information from and about T.E. Lawrence in the form of letters, notes, and questions answered, with commentary by the authors. Both Graves and Hart were close friends of Lawrence and had each earlier published a biography of the great man: - Well-known poet, war writer and mythologist Robert Graves’ very successful book was Lawrence and the Arabs (1927). The younger Graves had first met Lawrence at Oxford in 1920, and was even consulted by David Lean during the making of the film Lawrence of Arabia. - Sir Basil Henry (B.H.) Liddell Hart, an expert military strategist and important writer of military histories/biographies, first met Lawrence in 1929 and wrote T.E. Lawrence: In Arabia and After (1934). Brian Reid, in Studies in British Military Thought (1998), notes that “Hart’s relationship with T.E. Lawrence was something more than close friendship – it was hero worship.” (Reid also notes that Graves and Hart were first drawn together by Lawrence’s sudden death, in 1935, which led to their collaboration on this memorial set.) An important biographical source and a lovely set to add to any Lawrence collection. ** ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE, PLEASE INQUIRE ** Categories: Autobiography/Biography ________________________________________ Booth Policies Payment: We accept Google Checkout, Paypal, checks drawn in US funds and US cash.
