Daughters of America by Phebe A Hanaford HC 1882
Hardcover, published by True & Company. 750 pages. DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA contains the first published attempt to record the life and times of hundreds of extraordinary women. This particular volume is a new edition, revised and improved and retitled from the original Women of the Century. From the author, "The women of the first and second centuries of our nation's life will forever be acknowledged as the shapers of its lofty destinies and marvelous triumphs in very many directions. The sowers and the reapers shall rejoice together". This remarkable book chronicles a vast array of women. The 29 chapters include insightful profiles of: Women of the American Revolution, The Wives of the Presidents, Women during the Civil War, Women Reformers, Women Physicians, Women in Business and Women Lawyers, to name a few. Invaluable and entertaining, Hanaford's work here is an enduring example of the profound influence of women throughout Western culture. PHEBE A. HANAFORD (1829-1921) was born into a Quaker family on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. She spoke openly of her desire to be a Quaker preacher and eventually took the pledge at age 18 as an ordained chaplain and treasurer of the Daughters of Temperance. However, her commitment as an abolitionist led her to relinquish her Quaker pacifism. As a result, her contact with women of the Universalist church opened up a world of activism for the rights of women. The dedication reads "To The Women of Future Centuries of the United States of America This record of many wome of the first and second centuries whose lives were full of usefulness, and therefore worthy of renown and imitation, is now enscribed". In the center of the book, sadly, pages 273 - 276 are out of the binding and torn. The cover is a bit dirty and stained. The corners of the cover are frayed and bent. Binding is just slightly loose. Inside pages have yellowed. The inside back cover paper is peeling away to reveal the webbing. This book is an important piece of American history, a chronicle of the gentler sex and their impact on the shaping of America. A great old book to add to your library!
