DESCRIPTION:
Here's yet another killer split disc from Rusty Axe that again introduces us to two obscure black metal bands, and like previous splits from the label that I've fawned over here at C-Blast (the Raw Hatred/Misanthropy split, Blood Cult/Enbilulugugal, etc.), we're getting turned on to some stranger, more idiosyncratic denizens of the black metal subterrain. This time around, it's a double header of Marks Of The Masochist and Enecare, one American, the other Irish. The bands don't sound anything alike, which is one of the strength's of Rusty Axe's split albums; what these bands do share in common is a penchant for extreme low-fi recordings, perverse and misanthropic subject matter, and quirky approaches to raw-as-hell black metal.
With members divided up across the U.S., Marks Of The Masochist features folks from both Raw Hatred and Misanthropy, but instead of following the furious blown-out black metal noisethrash of those bands, the sound here is slower, doomier, and way more despondant in tone. Their side has seven tracks of mostly mid-paced melencholy depressive black metal that reeks of treble and razor-thin production, but the buzzsaw melodies and melodic riffing are pretty damn killer, the bass player breaks out some very post-punk sounding basslines, and the band often slips into a doomy, rocking plod that reminds me of some of Furze's more Sabbathoid moments, or a more psychedelic Silencer. Then there are those fucking insane high-pitched shrieks, blackened pterodactyl screams that are almost as hysterical as the vocals on Fleurety's old demo. Wicked.
Enecare, on the other hand, come raging forth with the second half of this disc, blasting through eight tracks of super heavy, SUPER DISTORTED satanic black metal, the product of another one man loner BM outfit, this one operated by an entity known as Vermiis Obscurus. The levels of distortion on their recording is completely out of control, the guitars shrouded in black fuzz, the drums rendered into blasted blown-out thunder, thick sheets of white noise and fuzz blanketing all aspects of their sound. It's almost as blown-out sounding as Blodulv or Misanthropy, but the riffs and lead guitars cut through the murk more clearly than in those bands, and the guitars are pretty epic in the riff department too, laden with massive melodic hooks and evil buzzsaw ambience, all swathed in clouds of Merzbowian hiss. Nasty, epic black metal filth that gets noisier and noisier with each track, until the final song "Over A Sinking World" is almost completely blurred by a whiteout of distortion.
Both bands dish out some amazing ultra-distorted terror, and fans of the fucked-up, damaged underground black metal that Rusty Axe specializes in (Enbilulugul, Blood Cult, Raw Hatred, Brobdingnagian, Toil, Godless, Tjolgtjar, etc.) should definitely check 'em out.
