ITEM: This is an original magazine article (not a reproduction) from "Scribner's Magazine" published in 1888. The pages have been carefully removed from the magazine. (You will only receive the pages pertaining to this complete article, not the entire magazine.) ARTICLE TITLE: "Modern Explosives" by Charles E. Munroe. This is mostly a chemical engineering article. QUOTE: "Two explosives of the Sprengel class have attracted attention. One, Helhofite, is used as a charge for the Gruson armour-piercing projectile; the other, rack-a-rock, was used in the blasting of Flood Rock. Helhofite may be made by dissolving dinitrobenzene in concentrated nitric acid. Rack-a-rock is produced by saturating potassium chlorate with mononitrobenzene. Of course, the composition of these bodies is given in general terms.....In the course of this paper the use of explosives for military purposes has been frequently mentioned. The fact is that by far the largest consumption is for industiral uses. They are used in agriculture for felling trees, grubbin stumps, blasting rocks, and shaking the soil to fit it for vegetation or to destroy the phyllozera. They are used in the petroleum industry to 'shoot' the wells, so as to remove the paraffine which prevents the flow of oil." It goes on to mention other uses. He also talks about "gun-cotton" alot. SIZE: Each page measures about 6 1/2" x 9 3/8". There are 14 pages (counting front and back of each page) of text and illustrations (21 drawings). CONDITION: The pages have light age-related wear, with a few small spots. Any pink or green tint, or wavy lines on the pictures are from my scanner. Unfortunately, these old printed drawings don't scan well. COPYRIGHT: 1888 SHIPPING: $2.95 for First-Class Mail, with Delivery Confirmation in the USA.
