Mule Train Crossing the Sierras.

A beautiful print from from the Deluxe Edition of John Muir's Picturesque California, published in 1888. This is a strong and crisp photogravure executed by one of the best known western artists, Frederick Remington. A packer with seven fully loaded mules stops for drink on a mountain stream. Signed "Remington" in the plate. The print measures 7 7/8 x 10 3/8" and is tipped-in to a stiff mounting board measuring 15 x 20". The protective tissue guard bearing the title and note, "A pass in this region means simply any notch with its connecting canyon, and ridges through which one may, by the exercise of unlimited patience, make out to lead a sure-footed mule or mustang." is included

The mounting board is brittle and lightly damp stained along top and bottom edges, with a couple of short tears or chips in the board. The tissue guard and mounting board both exhibit some soiling around edges as well. The etching itself is virtually defect-free and very good or better, the mounting medium is only fair. (A-) [Fitch 54-268]
