Madeline Manning became the first American woman in history to win an Olympic half-mile run and posting a new world record of 2:00.9. Wyomia Tyus picked up her degree on the same day she qualified for the U.S. Women's Olympic team. She nipped the 100-meter-dash-tape in 11 seconds flat for a new Olympic and world's record. She also added another chunk of Olympic hardware by anchoring the American women's 4 x 100 relay to a new world mark of 42.8. When she finished first, it became the first time in Olympic history that a sprinter (male or female) became a repeat gold medal winner. After that, Wyomia retired from competition. Coach Ed Temple became the first track mentor in the history of the world to coach a repeat Olympic sprint winner. Professional Football Draftees were: James Marsalis, Kansas City Chiefs Elbert Drungo, Houston Oilers King Dunlap, Baltimore Colts Joe Cooper, Pittsburgh Steelers Harry Carpenter, Atlanta Falcons Harold Rice, Oakland Raiders Bob Shannon, Washington Redskins Fred Summrall, Washington Redskins Bob Askew, Washington Redskins An absolutely wonderful piece of African-American history!
