A medicine bag is a deep-rooted Native American tradition that spiritually represents the person who wears it. They are pouches or bundles of sacred objects. The medicine bag is known in all cultures and through all of history. They are deeply honored and sacred to their caretakers. There are several different types of medicine bags for different purposes. They are considered living things and honored as such.
A medicine bag holds objects of individual spiritual importance. The objects kept in the bag are often referred to as power objects and all are considered sacred to the person that put them in the bag. Sacred objects kept in the bags can include items such as stones, gems and minerals, herbs, teeth, claws, fur, feathers, corn, beans or squash seeds. (The Three Sisters - corn, beans and squash - represented abundance and a deep connection with Mother Earth.) Objects that connect you with your personal totem are the ones that often find their home within the medicine bag. The words "totem animal" are often referred to. That would mean something that represents an animal that you closely associate with and experience a oneness with, as I do with the bear. You can put something to symbolize this animal in your medicine bag. Your article would embody the power the animal.
