Over the past 100 years or so, Steiff has produced stuffed replicas of just about every creature known to have inhabited the earth and sea, wild or domesticated. When Walt Disney brought the animated Bambi to movie screens in August 1942, Steiff wasn't exactly in a position to produce a toy version of the little fawn. Although the film was seen in parts of Europe as early as 1943, and around the world during the post-war years, it was not released in Germany until December 1950. By 1952, Steiff had created its stuffed velveteen Bambi which remained in production for the next 20 years.

Bambi stands 5.5" tall and has a rusty brown velveteen body with lighter tan face, spotted back and black air-brushed hooves. Accenting the young deer's expressive face are black bead eyes with white fabric and air-brushed details and a black embroidered nose. The body is firmly stuffed; only the ears are flexible. The fawn has a tan mohair chest and tail.

This example of Bambi bears no identifying Steiff button or tag. It may be from as early as the 1950s (7414,0), from the 1960s (7414,00) or even from the 1968-1972 era (1840/14).
