Characterization - Sports - Baseball Player Roberto Clemente 01 Roberto was born in the summer of 1934 in Barrio San Anton, Carolina, Puerto Rico. He died on December 31, 1972, in a plane crash a few miles from his birthplace while attempting to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Roberto Clemente's body was never recovered. In the United States, Roberto Clemente became a baseball legend. In his homeland and throughout Latin America he is a cultural icon. His story is a study in character and drive and the ascendancy of man to myth. It provides a unique glimpse into the America of his time, the game known as “America’s Pastime,” and the heroism that transcends both. Clemente was a professional baseball player and a Major League Baseball right fielder. He was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico, the youngest of seven children. On November 14, 1964, he married Vera Zabala at San Fernando Church in Carolina. The couple had three children: Roberto Jr., Luis Roberto and Enrique Roberto. He began his professional career playing with the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League (LBBPR). While he was playing in Puerto Rico, the Brooklyn Dodgers offered him a contract to play with the Montreal Royals. Clemente accepted the offer and was active with the team until he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League Baseball draft that took place on November 22, 1954. Roberto's MLB debut was on April 17, 1955 for the Pittsburgh Pirates; his last Last MLB appearance was October 3, 1972 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Clemente's Career statistics in his Batting average is .317 with 3,000 Hits including 240 Home runs with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972. Clemente played eighteen seasons in Major League Baseball all with Pittsburgh. He was awarded the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award in 1966. During the course of his career, Clemente was selected to participate in the league's All Star Game on twelve occasions. Roberto won twelve Gold Glove Awards and led the league in batting average four different seasons. He was involved in charity work both in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries, often delivering baseball equipment and food to them. He was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1973, thus becoming the first Latin American to be selected and the only current Hall of Famer for whom the mandatory five year waiting period was waived since the wait was instituted in 1954. Clemente is also the first Hispanic to win a World Series as a starter (1960), win a league MVP award (1966) and win a World Series MVP award (1971). Clemente decided to accompany the fourth relief flight, hoping that his presence would ensure that the aid would be delivered to the survivors. The airplane he chartered for a New Year's Eve flight, a Douglas DC-7, had a history of mechanical problems and sub-par flight personnel; and it was overloaded by 5,000 pounds. It crashed into the ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico immediately after takeoff on December 31, 1972. A few days after the crash, the body of the pilot and part of the fuselage of the plane were found. An empty flight case apparently belonging to Clemente was the only personal item recovered from the plane. Teammate Manny Sanguillen, a catcher and Clemente's best friend, was the only member of the Pirates not to attend Roberto's funeral. He chose instead to dive into the waters where Clemente's plane had crashed in an effort to find his teammate. Clemente's body was never recovered. ........................................................ This original drawing is something special to have in your possession. Your Charcoal Drawing is Sold by me the artist and signed by me the artist - I especially enjoy drawing and characterizing special emotion featured in an individual's face and eyes to reflect the mood of the moment as I see it presented. I capture and characterize a great deal more than is openly evident in appearance for every individual, pet, animal or any type of object; and, I represent that individualism in each sketch. I like to draw being certain there are pleasing contrasts in charcoal tone and shading to bring out detail characteristic depths. Each charcoal drawing is a "one-of-a-kind", original sketch for your unique display; or providing an exceptional gift for that very special person. I draw with charcoal to achieve a very specific and desired effect that renders detail characteristics and style of a subject's facial features with a softer finish and illustrative expression. **** Please Note **** Internet graphic images do not provide the perfected quality and detail of the actual features included in the Charcoal Sketch Drawing - **** Please Note **** Shipping to the U.S. is included for this item!
