In Judaism a cantor is the person who heads the congregation in prayer.

Cantors are also known as a chazzan or hazzan.

In the Jewish religion music is an important event prayer services and the Cantors provide the songs and music.

Not all cantors are skilled and trained as some volunteer to lead the congregration in prayer.

In smaller synagogues, a rabbi might lead the community prayer as the cantor.

Professional Cantors are skilled and trained cantors hired and paid in the larger synagogues.

Cantors often work with synagogue rabbis to lead and educate members of their congregation.

Their primary role is to lead prayer services sometimes with a choir as well.

Professional cantors will teach members of their congregation how to participate in prayer services and read from the Torah.

They prepare children for their bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies.

Professional cantors, like ministers and clergy will perform weddings and funerals.
