| Antique Athabaskan Hand Beaded Native American Bag Alaska Only one available in stock ![]() ![]() |
This is a beautiful beaded Native American made pouch or bag. The beading is Athabaskan in nature. I also had our local Indian Reservation, the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, Museum take a look at it and they concurred with the lady at the trading post that the bag is Athabaskan in origin. This is what the beading expert at the trading post had to say. THE BAG SHOWS ATHABASKAN BEADING TRAITS. MOST LIKELY MADE SOMEWHERE IN THE LATE 1950'S TO THE EARLY 1960'S. THE LEATHER USED IS APPEARINGLY MOOSE, SINCE THAT PARTICULAR TRIBE OF NATIVE AMERICANS RANGE FROM ALASKA TO THE NORTHERN UNITED STATES. SHE ALSO SAID THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LEATHER USED INDICATES THAT IS MOOSE, SINCE IT'S A HEAVY LEATHER AND MOOSE HIDE HAS THAT CHARACTERISTIC. I had the bag appraised by this Lady but did not get it in writing. As you can see from the photos, the bag is heavily beaded and this includes the back as well as the front. I personally feel it’s a very beautiful bag, and highly collectible and unique. Since the bag is so heavily beaded it's the opinion of several of the experts I asked about it, that the bag was probably made as a Wedding gift or perhaps for some type of ceremonial presentation gift. The bag itself is in very good shape. I have not noticed any rips or missing pieces. There is a few small areas on the top edge and very bottom of the bag where some of the beadwork is missing. The bag itself shows wear in the form of shading, but for the age of the bag and the fact that it’s not a museum piece, that it’s been used, it’s understandable it would have a small area of missing beadwork that could possibly be repaired. Some of the beading appears to be real glass and what materials the other beads are made from would be probably seed type and others. The bag is lined with what I was told is TRADE CLOTH in a dark blue and kind of creme color check. The creme color also features small yellow flowers. I personally am no expert in this field, but in my opinion only, I do believe the evaluation performed by the beading expert from the trading post is true. The beading on the bag does seem to be Athabaskan in origin from the research I have done on it myself. But this is just my opinion, as I said I am not an expert in this field. Item sold as is.
