Due to the fact that most of their skeleton is composed of cartilage, very few post cranial elements remain in the fossil record.
The most common shark remains are their teeth, which are constantly lost in life. The teeth are all from the same type of shark, The Great White Carcharodon carcharias. These specimens are all from the Pliocene (2 million years old) Hawthorne Formation of South Carolina 3b.
