I came across this gorgeous hand carved little House Wren sculpture at a recent sale. It is signed and dated by the artist and also has a sticker on the bottom from The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, awarding it a Juried Status Award. I was unable to find any information about the artist and I did contact the Guild. They don’t have computer records going that far back. The piece is dated 1983 and the Artist’s name appears to be S.A. Balaban, Wayne, PA and the piece is titled House Wren. It is obvious that the artist loved to carve birds as much as he must have enjoyed looking them in nature. It is the most realistic carving I have ever seen and will be a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork to be treasured always.
According to the Guild’s website, the Juried Status is the crown jewel. It is a measure of excellence and is the mark of achievement that distinguishes work from the mainstream. It grants recognition for a body of work that is exceptional. Juried Status in the PGC is an honor awarded to work deemed to show, excellence in craftsmanship, resolved design, and a unique style. It is an honorary designation awarded only after rigorous hands on examination of the work in question.
The wood sculpture stands 8 1/2” tall, that is from the bottom of the base to the top of the driftwood piece. The little wren stands on the driftwood and you would swear it was alive and if you move to quickly it would take flight. It is amazing how detailed and adorable it is. The bird is approximately 4 inches in length. The wood oval base is 7 inches in length and 5” wide. This would make a truly unique gift for any bird lover, Ornithologist or collector of fine wood carvings.
