I came across this picturesque and charming Amish Wisconsin Farm Scene painted by the well-known Wisconsin artist, Gladys Grieger at a recent sale. It is an original acrylic and is one of three of hers that I currently have listed (the three were a grouping, but I am selling them individually). I will gladly combine shipping if more than one is purchased. I was able to contact Gladys in Wisconsin. She has had a life long interest in art and has always liked the old fashioned scenes and likes to paint realistic images. She no longer does art shows and only paints commissioned work, mostly for people who own Farmsteads and want a painting done of their home. Some of her work is in private collections and galleries throughout the country. She has taught adult education painting classes at the Madison Area Technical College for over twenty years and is a longtime resident of Waunakee, Wisconsin. She believes she did this painting in the 1970s or early 1980s.

Most people think of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana when they talk about the Amish, but Wisconsin is the state with the fourth highest Amish population. Gladys said she was raised on a farm herself and her paintings often incorporate those memories and observations as a child. The painting is done on an oval piece of Masonite that she purchased from the local lumber store and cut into the oval shape. It is in a wood frame painted gold. This picture shows a farm set among the gorgeous rolling countryside of Wisconsin. The painting takes you back in time to a quieter and simpler way of life. The view of the farm is from inside the barn with an old wooden plough inside the barn. The farmhouse and the barn in the background are set in the midst of a golden field with the sun setting in the sky above the mountains. The painting captures all the quiet tranquility and the peacefulness of rural Wisconsin. I love the old wood look with the iron being the color of the ground. All the colors in the painting are in perfect harmony and almost glow. It measures 9” across and 10 ¾” long. It is signed G. Grieger and has her card on the back which states “Original Paintings by Gladys Grieger, Waunakee, Wis.

The painting is in excellent condition and ready to hang on the wall. There are some tiny cracks in the frame on the side, I’m not sure if it is the paint or the frame. (see pictures) I tried to locate some of her original paintings for sale on line, but there are none. I did find a limited edition signed print of Waunakee’s historic depot and that was listed with Border Art Custom Framing in Waunakee for $200.00. That is a print not an original. I did find a record online for some of her work that had been listed previously at the Newell Gallery in Waunakee and I contacted them. The pieces they had of hers were oil on canvas and sold for between $700 and $800 (measured 15 X 20). They did not have any more of her work for sale.

This would be a truly unique and wonderful piece of art to add to your country home, or for someone who admires the Amish way of life.
