This beautiful Soapstone platter or decorative plate and matching candle holders have a bold black and white geometric pattern. The platter measures 14 inches long and 9 inches wide. The candle holders are just over 7 inches tall. They are in excellent condition.
On the back is a label that reads “Soapstone – This item is made from soapstone: a soft metamorphic rock mined in Kisii in Kenya for centuries. Out of this rock the expert Kisii carver chisels out this unique carving. Hand dyed and incised or left natural: these carvings make unique gift or decorative accessory”. Skilled African carvers use century old techniques to create the smooth finish in the sculpting of this platter. Because the candle holders are hand made, they are not perfectly straight like factory made ones. Each holder is a unique piece. Since Kisii is a highly absorbent stone, this plate should be for decorative use only and is not suitable for food use. It also reads “Hand carved with love & care in Kenya.”
