This is one of Edith Heath's Modernist teapots in the "Sea and Sand" glaze. This is a rare, hard to find handcrafted and hand glazed California Stoneware design. Heath Ceramics has been producing handcrafted stoneware at the same Sausalito California location for over 50 years. All of their products are made by hand and not mass produced. The Company was founded in the mid 1940s by Edith Heath.

I contacted the Company to verify the glaze name and they stated that they no longer have the ingredients to create this particular glaze. Even the replacement china sites don't have this particular teapot available. Heath Ceramics used to manufacture it in the Coupe Line as well as the Rim Line.

Edith Heath was born in 1911 and passed away in 2005. She won numerous awards and her work is included in many major museum collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Oakland Museum in Oakland, California. The Pasadena Museum of California held an exhibit recently called "Edith Heath, Tabletop Modernist". She had a unique sense of design, which makes each of her pottery pieces a work of art. Heath Ceramics continues today and it is one of the few remaining mid-century American Potteries.

The teapot is signed with an impressed Heath with the cup-and-saucer logo and Made in USA. It has a squatty look to it and measures just under 4 1/2 inches from the bottom of the teapot to the top of the spout. To the top of the handle it is approximately 6 inches. It is about 9 inches long and 7 inches deep. The glaze is a creamy beige color and transitions into a deep speckled green. It is complete with the handmade wrapped copper handle. The copper has some darker spots on it (see picture) typical of aging copper. I did not try to clean it. The teapot is in very good condition except for two problems; 1.) a defect, which looks like a factory firing flaw on the bottom edge of the lid rim (see picture with arrow). It seems too smooth to be a chip, although I could be wrong and 2.) a tiny hairline crack on the inside lip of the top of the pot. I didn't notice it until I took the close up pictures. I have pointed it out with an arrow as well. Both of the problems are minor, but I wanted you to be aware of them. What a wonderful work of art and sculpture. It is not only functional but is a beautiful piece to display and will bring a special touch to your table. It is a wonderful example of California Pottery. These teapots new are $165.00. This is a rare and discontinued glaze and well worth the cost!
