This beautiful buttterfly is a unique item. It is hand made and can be hung on a wall or used as a suncatcher in a window.

Fused glass involves two sheets of glass. They are painted and then heat-processed in kilns at temperatures up to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. The Egyptians were familiar with fused-glass techniques as early as 2,000 BC, and fusing remained the primary technique for making small glass objects until the advent of the blowpipe in the first Century BC. The less labor-intensive blown glass replaced fused glass until the early 20th Century, when its artistic value was rediscovered.

This Art Glass originates in a family-run studio founded by a Chilean woman who immigrated to Costa Rica. During my stays in their village, I became familiar with their work. The current matriarch, her brother, son, and daughter-in-law, as well as a street urchin from Nicaragua, whom the family took in years ago, design and create these intricate and unique glass objects.
