Millefiore or Millefiori is a type of art glass in which the artist creates long canes of glass, usually shaped like flowers, that are like solid straws or thin pipes. The artisan then cuts them and fuses them together into a single piece of glass. This piece of glass is then shaped into whatever the artist desires. In this case, the artist made an apple, then added a clear satiny glass leaf and a stem. What is really unique about the piece is that the stem is hollow and could be used to hold a small candle or a pen or pencil. What a fabulous desk accessory! The apple, about 2" tall, is primarily a dark, cobalt blue with white outlined flowers of yellow, bright orange/red, and black. It is ini mint condition, has a rough pontil (showing it was handmade rather than produced by machine) and is simply beautiful! See our listing for its companion piece, an equally beautiful pear.
