This fine sculpture of a penguin with his wings extended and his head turned upward was made by the Karl Ens porcelain factory in Volkstedt, Thuringia, Germany before the company was nationalized by the East German State. Like other early pieces created by Ens, the colors are superb, and the modeling is wonderful – note how beautifully the penguin’s plump feathered chest shown, and how realistic the pose with upturned beak is. The Ens factory was appropriately famous for their animal sculptures, particularly those representing birds, and has often been compared to Meissen, a premier European porcelain maker, in terms of quality, craftsmanship, and beauty. The sculpture is in perfect condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs. The penguin appears to be perched on a small piece of ice, ready for strut his stuff or to dive into the freezing Antarctic waters. The color enhancement makes the bird dramatically beautiful and elegant, even though in its native environment and colors it is equally striking in appearance. There is the usual black and white, plus shades of a bluish green gray that enhance the appearance of the feathered wings and tail. There is also pale yellow on its chest and a touch of beige on its beak. The top of its head is painted with an intense dark teal blue/green, which is a cast of color that appears on the oily black of the sleek feathered birds. That touch of color makes this sculptured bird truly stand out. The sharp details of the pointed beak and delicacy of the outstretched wings, the beady eyes, and the toes, which are clearly defined, are extraordinary. The penguin is nearly 5 inches tall including the small ice-floe base, which is about 1/2 inch tall. The piece is in excellent if not mint condition. There is no damage and are no flaws or repairs of any kind. It is clearly marked on the bottom with the ENS logo and an impressed "C". The Ens mark was used between 1919 and 1959, with the penguin probably made in the 1920’s or 30’s. It is a magnificent piece, made with exquisite care. BUY WITH CONFIDENCE.
