This is one of those one-of-a-kind pieces you don't come across often (if at all). I've NEVER seen one with a BLUE PORCELAIN body!! It's a Windsor smokeless oil heater. It has patent dates on the burner but I just can't make them out. Regardless, it would date to the Late 1800's/VERY early 1900's. Similar ones I've seen have patent dates up to 1917. AMAZING that it still has its ORIGINAL Fuel tank inside & it appears to be in EXCELLENT condition! Something else that's RARE is that it still has its' little Isenglass "window" intact. Suffice it to say it's usually missing in pieces this old. So it's an especially nice bonus to find it still intact.
The plaques on the front read "GIANT 705" & "WINDSOR SMOKELESS OIL HEATER" with the little window below. The porcelain could certainly use a good cleaning & has some scratches to it as pictured but the color is still quite vibrant & displays BEAUTIFULLY. It still has the original wire handle with the twisted coils! Notice the vent holes on the top? As pictured you can turn the lever on top to open or close them as needed. It works effortlessly. Just a GORGEOUS piece!
Measures THIRTY-FIVE & 1/2" WITH the Handle UP & 25 1/4" with the handle DOWN. It is 17 3/4" WIDE & 49" AROUND.
I have no idea how these things worked. I'm guessing you'd pour the oil into the giant burner fuel reserve in the base. But I have no idea how to light it. The knob turns freely but I'm not sure what it's supposed to DO. I don't see any reason why it WOULDN'T work if someone knew what they were doing....but I'm not going to GUARANTEE it since I DON'T know what I'm doing! I bought it because it would just make such a precious statement in the right vintage or custom decor.
