This is an old AMERICAN Western Saddle with a WOODEN Saddle Tree. This one has managed to survive with most of the leather from the top of the saddle!! SO MUCH SO that we're able to research it right back to where it came from!
It still has its' ORIGINAL Metal MAKERS TAG! It reads: "TEXAS TANNING & MFG. Co. HEREFORD BRAND YOAKUM TEXAS. This piece dates to sometime between 1920-1940. The Texas Tanning & Manufacturing Company began manufacturing finished leather products as well as these Hereford Brand Western Saddles & Texas Ranger belts during the Great Depression. The company was famed WORLDWIDE for their quality leather pieces. THIS is one of the ORIGINAL Hereford Saddle trees & MUCH of the original leather saddle is still attached! We know its' date of manufacture because the company changed their name just prior to 1940 to "TEX TAN". And THIS PIECE is marked with the PRE-1940 "Texas Tanning & Mfg. Co".!! Its owner must have been VERY proud of it as he carved his initials into the letter on BOTH sides (MHJ) & HE CARVED An "E" INTO the leather underneath. You can search the net as I did & not be able to come up with one of these original early 1900's saddles with this mark.
MANY of the original old iron nails are still perfectly attached to the tree beneath! This is a VERY Rustic piece that would look wonderful as a stand alone display piece OR as a wall hang....any number of uses but DEFINITELY a GREAT Conversation Piece ! The construction on these things is just fascinating to view. TONS of the old nails can still be found embedded into the rawhide covering the tree below!Measures approx. 21" long, 14 1/4" wide & 13" tall.
