1.) Every person has more than 500 follicles per square inch. Each follicle is capable of growing a hair at any time. At any one time, however, less than 20% of them grow at the same time or approximately 100 follicles.

2.) Hair follicles grow in cycles. Since not all grow at the same time, there are many periods of rest for hair follicles. During these rest periods, hair may remain in the follicle for a long time, or it may fall out. The follicle actually shrinks during the rest period and the dermal papilla cells are separated from the bottom of the follicle. When the rest period is over, the follicle grows down to meet the dermal papilla again, and the cells start making another hair. This cycle continues throughout the lifetime of a person.

3.) It takes 8 to 12 weeks for a hair to grow from the base of the follicle to the surface of the skin. This means that even if you tweeze a hair out, you have to wait up to 12 weeks for the hair to grow again. Many people think that if they tweeze or wax all of the hairs from an area of skin in a day, that the hairs that they notice in the same area the next week are the same hairs that have re-grown. This is truly not the case. These hairs are actually from a completely different hair follicle.
