This is a large book for the machinist, it's got over 730 pages, divided into 12 sections. Each section covers a different area of machine work with detailed explainations and illustrations.
The first five sections cover lathework from beginning to end. The author packs a ton of information about lathes and their uses into these sections.
The next five chapters of the book discuss drilling, planing, milling and grinding. Finish off the book with a lesson in gear making and a final chapter on tool-making.
I believe that if one were to study this book and put the information into practice, he or she would do well in the machine shop. It's a good bit of shop knowlege that no machinist or machinist-wannabe should be without.

In the first chapter of this 524 page book, the author dives right into the cutting tools used with lathes and planing machines. Chapter two goes on to describe proper cutting speeds & feed.
Boring and screw cutting are covered in the next two illustrated chapters. From there, the author moves on to lathe dogs, chucks and turning accentrics. A full chapter is devoted to hand-turning, which contains illustrations and in-depth instructions.
In the last half of the book, the author discusses milling and grinding machines and the tools used with them. He also covers laying out the work and then proceeds to desribe and illustrate the tools used. In the final chapters, he covers calculations and settings every machinist can use.
I'm not a machinist, but I believe that with the information contained in this book, I could get there from here. It's full of detailed drawings and superb instructions that take into account any lack of previous experience. It's a book I would want in my machine shop referrence library for sure.

Threading machines and thread mills are covered beginning in chapter 9. Two chapters follow this that detail attachments and other information about the thread mill. Chapter 12 discusses thread rolling and the final chapter details precision screw thread cutting.
It seems that the author fully understood thread cutting from beginning to end and he put that knowledge into this book. I believe one could learn to do screw cutting from this book.

This is a pretty cool book with lots and lots of information to absorb. It's got a good number of illustrations that help get the point across. It's a book I'd want by my side to learn metal lathework for sure.
