CLADDAGH HISTORY: The early history of the Claddagh goes back over 400 years to a small fishing village on the shores of Galway Bay. (Claddagh is said to be the oldest fishing village in Ireland)......The original Claddagh ring is generally attributed to one Richard Joyce, a native of Galway. Legend tells us that a fishing boat from the village was captured by pirates and the crew taken as slaves. One of the crew, a man named Richard Joyce was to have been married the same week of the capture. He was sold to a Moorish goldsmith who trained him in his craft. He never forgot his girl back home and made a ring of gold for her, with a heart for love, a crown for loyalty, and two hands for friendship. After eight years he was released and returned to Galway. To his great joy, he found she had never given up hope of seeing him again. He gave her the ring he had made for her and they married, never to be separated again.......The ring has become popular all over the world ~ its spread being helped by the vast exodus during the great potato famine in 1847-49. These rings were kept as heirlooms with great pride and passed from mother to daughter. Today, the ring is worn extensively across Ireland, either on the right hand with the heart turned outwards showing that the wearer is "fancy free" or with the heart turned inwards to denote that he or she is "spoken for". The pride of placement is on the left hand, with the heart turned in, indicating that the wearer is happily married.
