"Quarter-Deck of The Himalaya Steam-Ship" Antique PrintDESCRIPTION: This is an 1854 antique wood engraving of the early P & O Line steamer, the S.S. Himalaya, which was launched in 1853. She was the first of three ships of this name and the smallest at 3,438 gross tons. Her hull was iron, 370 feet long with a beam of 44 feet, one funnel, and three masts that were rigged for sail, and a single screw with a speed of 12 knots. HIMALAYA was designed for two hundred passengers, and made only one passage for P & O to Alexandria, Egypt and return before being converted to a British troopship for service in the Crimean War. After the war she continued as a troopship between England and India until 1894. In 1910 she was based at Chatham, River Medway as a coal barge, and in 1920 was sold to private owners at Portland Harbour. In June 1940, she was bombed and sunk by German air attack on Portland Harbour.
