History
These sterling silver enamelled travel shield charms were popular with European, British and American travelers in the 1940's, 1950's 1960's, 1970's, and are highly collectible items today. The colorful vintage / retro look is very appealing to collectors and are quite the conversation piece. Some have a vintage patina and some look like they are brand new even if they are over 50 or 60 years old. They are wearable postcards and miniature works of art.

Women documented their travels by collecting a souvenir shield charm depicting the town or country coat of arms crest, a scenic picture of the area, castles, a famous landmark (Eiffel Tower), building (White House), person from history (Mozart) or an event (Olympics).
These charms were often given to women as gifts from their men who were traveling abroad.

<spacer type="block" height="1" width="1">   Wikipedia Info:
Trinitŕ dei Monti (also called Santissima Trinitŕ al Monte Pincio, Trinitŕ del Monte, or Holy Trinity on Pincio Hill) is a famous church in Rome. It is best known for its scenographic dominance above the Spanish Steps that descend into the Piazza di Spagna.

Spanish Steps
- Rome at Piazza di Spagna
The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata della Trinitŕ dei Monti) is a set of steps in Rome, Italy, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinitŕ dei Monti, dominated by Trinitŕ dei Monti, the church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, above. The Scalinata is "without a doubt the longest and widest staircase in all Europe".[1]

The monumental stairway of 138 steps was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, today still located in Palazzo Monaldeschi in the piazza below, with the Trinitŕ dei Monti above.

Following a competition in 1717 the steps were designed by the little-known Francesco de Sanctis,[2] though Alessandro Specchi was long thought to have produced the winning entry. Generations of heated discussion over how the steep slope to the church on a shoulder of the Pincio should be urbanized preceded the final execution. Archival drawings from the 1580s show that Pope Gregory XIII was interested in constructing a stair to the recently-completed façade of the French church. Gaspar van Wittel's view of the wooded slope in 1683, before the Scalinata was built, is conserved in the Galleria Nazionale, Rome.[3] The Roman-educated Cardinal Mazarin took a personal interest in the project that had been stipulated in Gueffier's will and entrusted it to his agent in Rome, whose plan included an equestrian monument of Louis XIV, an ambitious intrusion that created a furore in papal Rome. Mazarin died in 1661, the pope in 1667, and Gueffier's will was successfully contested by a nephew who claimed half; so the project lay dormant until Pope Clement XI Albani renewed interest in it. The Bourbon fleur-de-lys and Innocent XIII's eagle and crown are carefully balanced in the sculptural details. The solution is a gigantic inflation of some conventions of terraced garden stairs.[4]

During Christmas time a 19th-century crib is displayed on the first landing of the staircase. During May, part of the steps are covered by pots of azaleas. In modern times the Spanish Steps have included a small cut-flower market. The steps are not a place for eating lunch, being forbidden by Roman urban regulations. The apartment that was the setting for The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone (1961) is halfway up on the right. Bernardo Bertolucci's Besieged (1998) is also set in a house next to the steps. American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan refers to the "Spanish Stairs" in his classic "When I Paint My Masterpiece" (1971).

The Spanish Steps, which Joseph de Lalande[5] and Charles de Brosses noted were already in poor condition,[6], have been restored several times, most recently in 1995.

Charms in Unique Shapes
Some of the older vintage shield charms were made in different shapes and sizes than the typical shield charm. I love to find these little treasures. (See Koln top left)
<spacer type="block" height="1" width="1">
Ornate Reverse Side
I especially like to find the rare charm with an ornate stamping on the back. Some charms were made two sided with a crest, flag or coat of arms on the back and a scene on the front. I wish they were all made two-sided.

Unique Charm Shapes
These types of enamel charms are great additions to your shield charm bracelet. These charms are about the same size, contain enamel and are also of the travel theme.
<spacer type="block" height="1" width="1">

<spacer type="block" height="1" width="1">
Brass or base metal & Enamel
I really love this type of charm, even though very often they are not silver. The colors are in a warmer vintage palette and they are thicker in depth than the most popular shield charms.

Heraldry, Coat of arms, crests, state or country flags or combinations of these elements.

Animal or Character Charms
Everyone loves these animal charms. One of my premier themed shield charm bracelets contains all animal charms – from zoos and nature parks around the world.
<spacer type="block" height="1" width="1">
Old Vintage Enamel Charms
These enamel charms have a somewhat muted vintage earthone) color scheme. They usually have a strip of silver between the name panel and the scene.
The text panel fields are usually white, black or red. They don't get any prettier than this.
