DEATH ON THE RIVER
THE STEAMBOAT WASHOE

“There is $16,000 in gold which was being shipped by the Rhodes Express Company still lying on the bottom of the Sacramento River.”
OLD SIDEWHEELER MEMORABILIA
IS RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING

Well folks, in the old days of sidewheelers – in the days of adventure - gold and speed were highly sought after. In the case of the sleek steamboat Washoe and many others – it meant trouble with a capital T. Here is the story entitled

DEATH ON THE RIVER

by Bob Young who writes as if he were there. Seems that one Captain William Kidd – master of the steamboat Washoe - was kinda itching for a drag race with the new Chrysopolis as they headed out of San Francisco Docks – down the Sacramento River. Trouble was, Kidd was outmanned and outgunned – the Chrysopolis was a new design and called the Queen of the River Run. Nevertheless, Captain Kidd was determined to out race her and here the story starts culminating in the loss of 102 dead, 11 missing and never found and 80 horribly burned.

IT WAS A TRAGIC, USELSS LOSS OF LIFE
The author writes authoritatively of many more explosions –the rarer ones about the old steamboats who revved up their engines only to make history racing between San Francisco and Sacramento and then exploding to their doom are seldom found. This records the history of the battle of gold and speed on the West Coast. Collectors treasure them and their price guide value rises every day. They are hard to find. I hunt them out because really the better, untold and rarer stories were published in the rest.

Here’s one of ‘em.
Following my retirement, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western heroes. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolk lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer’s shelf gathering dust gathering dust. Because Old Western History and Memorabilia was printed before computer indexing, I index every item I sell.

This complete index will be bound and included in this offering at no additional cost.
Humbly, I am trying to keep our history alive.
I hope you appreciate the effort.

DEATH ON THE RIVER

by Bob Young

OLD SIDEWHEELER MEMORABILIA
IS RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING

While others clip ads from magazines, I save history. It’s a shame that our past is being lost. It’s as simple as that.

My wife kids me that after I find a piece I like, buy it, read it, research it, take a picture, scan it, write the blurb, pay the Ebay entry fee and commission, that I end up making about 50 cents an hour. But, OH HOW I LOVE THIS OLD WESTERN HISTORY. What a story, Rare Story!!! Great Pictures. You will love it as it was published in this old complete and seldom found western magazine of many years ago. The issue is in excellent condition, the cover is pristine and in vibrant color.
As clearly stated in my description, this is featured story in a rarely found and seldom read unusual and complete western magazine. I don't give out name of publication or date because I have caught competitors copying my index and work and trying to sell it as theirs. I hope you understand.
Buyer pays postage of $3.50 First Class Postage to U. S., $4.75 Priority Mail. $11.00 Par Avion (Air Mail) for International Mail. Texans must pay 8- % sales tax. Thanks,
Tom
