A late nineteenth century (1880s to '90s) cabinet card photograph of a serious train wreck. Smoke is still rising from the wreckage of the demolished train. This is most likely French or German due to the style of the helmets worn by firemen in the photo. This is a rare subject for a cabinet card photograph.
The card measures 6 1/2" by 4 1/4". The back is blank.
The condition of the photo can be seen in the accompanying image. There is a significant four inch long diagonal crease that shows as a break in the card's back and on the front crosses the image diagonally and breaks one and a half inches of the emulsion on the front. There are also two thin cracks in the emulsion in the region of the left front bottom edge below the crease. These measure 5/8" and 1/4" in length. The image has excellent contrast.
