A fine late nineteenth century (1880's to '90's) Imperial cabinet card photograph of nine actresses dressed in classical Greek or Roman style for a play. They are posed in front of a dark draped cloth. One young woman is opening the lid of a box. The others look on in apparent anticipation of seeing what might be in the box or what might come out of it. One of them looks on with a worried frown as it is Pandora's box that is being opened! At the top of the cabinet in the margin in ink is written: "Pandora." In the bottom margin in ink is written the names of the actresses: "Margaret, A Maloney, R. Hill, C. Hyde, Lolla-lisa (and Aug for August?) (as best as I can make that one out), Mai Hyde, G Hause, L. Bullio, M. Springer." I hope that I have spelled these names correctly but the writing leaves some of the spellings open to a bit of interpretation.
The cabinet card measures 9 15/16" by 6 3/4". The thick cardboard mount has a gold gilt edge. The contrast in the image is excellent. The photographer has created the image with a bit of deliberate softness to the figures. The condition of the image is very fine. In the right margin, there is a photographer's mark that is partially obscured by the right edge of the image. What can be seen is the name: "St. Paul" and the beginning of the photographer's name. The first initial of his first name is "T". Then there is an M and then it ends with an M. The letters between the two M's are underneath the right edge of the photo. The back of the cabinet is blank. The photo's condition is shown in the accompanying picture.
