With Recipes for the Feast

by

Jeff Smith

The Frugal Gourmet Celebrates Christmas: Jeff leads us through the history of Christmas, focusing on traditions and lore, theology and myth, from Advent preparations to a thoughtful meditation on everyone who played a part in the manger scene. He wouldn’t be “the Frug” if he didn’t offer a dish for each one of them! As you prepare for your loved ones Green Olive Soup Jeff provides for the Sheperd Boy or the Flower Salad for the Blessed Mother, the lamb chops for the tax collector or the currant cake for on of the Three Kings, you will come to a deeper understanding of the true meaning of the Holiday. Jeff also reveals the stories behind the traditions of Christmas: Santa Claus, the Christmas Tree, gift giving, and Christmas Bells.

Then come the family memories and fully illustrated complete menus shared by the Smith family in Christmases past, centered on stuffed roast goose or roast prime rib. Recognizing that the winter season is a time of celebrationn and feasting for many cultures, Jeff also gives us the story of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, with classic recipes for latkes, crisp potato pancakes, and tzimmers, brisket with prunes and sweet potatoes; a Swedish Winter Feast, and extry-warm and hearty meal of corned pork and sauerkraut, destined to be eaten on a dark winter night; and a fabulous seafood pasta traditionally served at an Italian family Christmas Eve, replete with seven different fish, each representing one of the sacraments.

This is a book that you will start with in the kitchen, then take to the living room to read to the family under the Christmas tree.
