The owner removed the DCC decoder in both and rewired them for DC operation, owing to a portion of his own (huge) layout that ran DC traffic only. The models are of recent manufacture, and reflect the smooth, quite power and transmissions. They ran extremely well, and more importantly, they ran well TOGETHER, as a lash-up. A flashing beacon on the roof the of B unit pulses red, green and blue. But the headlight of the A unit is not working - replace the bulb. The over-all appearance is very good, but the road numbers were poorly applied decals which were peeling away, and we have removed them. What you receive is these exact units -but no numbers. Otherwise, the B&O dome logo and pin striping are painted on, and quite good. We have also fit the units with horn and hook couplers. There is glazing in the cab windows, but none in the side port holes -we suggest the addition of clear plastic or even transparent "foggy" tape to the inside. On the test layout, the motors were smooth as silk and the units ran as stable-mates, flawlessly up and down grades and through the turnouts. But we have a word of warning for you. When you bring them to a stop, do so SLOWLY, because a sudden stop stresses the drive shafts which continue to spin under flywheel momentum even when power is shut off. You will hear a slight "squeal" as the A unit stops. The locos, after all, we originally produced as DCC units and would therefore stop more slowly. These would be excellent candidates for conversion BACK to DCC, perhaps with sound. The right buyer for these is a beginning modeler who is ready for the move beyond play or experimental operation to an enduring hobby interest. Otherwise, a skilled modeler who wants smoothly running units for appearance and performance upgrades should be well pleased with these. Either way, they won't disappoint. Price of $40 for both (or less with the fleet discount - see below). |
