The modeler who orginally owned these had installed them properly to float over the roadbed. Consequently, ballast material was easily removed and they cleaned up very well. Made in England, they are highly regarded as the gold standard among serious American model railroaders. The layout itself was impecabbly clean and well maintained. Peco does not use the standard American system of classifying how sharply the diverging route moves off from the main (such as #4, #6, etc.) but rather classifies their turnouts as "large" or "small" radius. These are "small" radius turnout which equate roughly to a #5 1/2 American system measurement (there is, of course, no actual #5 1/2 commercially produced turnout). Insulated frogs means no current is present in the rails that comprise the frog. Instead, wheels roll over a small plastic section of track. Thus, short circuits are avoided. Owing to the very short length of this dead section (about 3/8") any loco with two or more wheels picking up track power should not stall over this area. For more on turnout terminology and electrical operation, follow the information link below. Please note that while all units are totally operational, some will have a few particles of scenic material stuck to them or a skin of solder if we removed adjoing track which had been soldered to the turnout. And on a few, one end of the throw arm may also have been clipped back to accomodate a close fit to other track on the layout. None of this has any practical impact on their operation or installation. Typical discount pricing for new product is nearly $17 a unit.
