Vintage 5 pcs Antipasto dish serving set Deruta Italy
Description:
About Deruta ...
Official records show ceramics being manufactured in Deruta since the 13th century: in fact by the end of the century Deruta was producing enough ceramics to pay its taxes to Perugia in vases instead of cash.By the end of the mid-fourteenth century, Deruta had assumed its role as the regional producer of ceramics and had progressed beyond the small-town kiln to become a major exporter. The most successful period for Deruta was the sixteen century when the artisans participated to the Renaissance revolution.
By 1600, from the intense creative impulses of the renaissance, a pattern became popular, the Raffaellesco design. The term Raffaellesco derives from one of the stars of renaissance- Raffaello. During the early part of the century, Raffaello painted a series of frescoes decorating a loggia in the Vatican and some of the motifs were grotesque: fantastic composition of plants, animal and humans. The potters of Deruta were aware of them and in pottery this motif took on a life on its own. From the end of the seventeenth to the nineteenth century Deruta suffered the general economic crisis and the competition from other places in Italy, till the second half of the nineteenth century when an interest in renaissance majolica grew up in all Europe, especially France and England. Some of the great majolica collections in Paris and in London* were created at this time. These were the first steps toward a new Renaissance for Deruta and its ceramics. These museums through the United States include pieces of ceramics from Deruta in their collection:California- The J.Paul getty MuseumFlorida- The John and Mabel Ringling Museum of ArtIndiana- University Art MuseumNew York- The Metropolitan Museum of ArtWashington, D.C.- The Sackler Collection- The Corcoran Museum of Art
