Hand Carved Ironwood Swordfish Marlin Sculpture Large
- Hand carved
- Mexican ironwood
- 16 inches high
- 4 inches across
- 7 inches deep
This incredible swordfish / marlin sculpture was created by Native Seri / Mexican Indians of Ironwood. It measures 16 inches high, 4 inches across and 7 inches deep; very heavy for its size. Ironwood (palo fierro) is extremely dense and so heavy it will not float. The Indians carve it using primitive tools, letting the form of the piece of wood define the finished sculpture.
This one is really very unique, well balanced, and has gorgeous grain! Hard to see in these photos, but notice the curve of the tail: the lighter portion is part of the bark and is called cascara, found only rarely in ironwood carvings and is greatly prized. Beautiful piece, in very good condition; one barely noticeable chip at the bottom edge of the tail. Tip: To keep ironwood looking shiny and new, polish occasionally with brown paste wax shoe polish. http://www.bonanzle.com/newriverone
