Huge Ironwood Eagle Seri Mexican Sculpture
- 20 inches high,
- 17 inches across and
- 8 inches deep
- Mexican Ironwood
- Hand carved
This incredible eagle sculpture was created by Seri Indian or Mexican native of Ironwood. It measures a huge 20 inches high, 17 inches across and 8 inches deep; VERY heavy for its size. Ironwood (palo fierro) is extremely dense and so heavy it will not float. The Indians carve it using primitive hand tools, letting the form of the piece of wood define the finished sculpture. This one is really very unique, extremely detailed, well balanced, and has gorgeous grain! It's hard to see in these photos, but the base includes lighter sections, called cascara, which are parts of the bark and highly prized in these sculptures. I don't know the sculptor as it's not signed, but it closely resembles works by the famed artist Roberto Solorio. Beautiful piece, in great condition. Tip: To keep ironwood looking shiny and new, polish occasionally with brown paste wax shoe polish.
