Old Chinese Warrior on Tiger Ceramic Roof Tile
 
Old Chinese roof tile in a type of ceramic or pottery with a majolica like brilliantly colored paint/glaze. Depicts a
warrior riding a tiger. Roof tiles were placed on ridges and roof edges as guardians and protectors of public
buildings and private homes. Its chief purpose is to produce an auspicious aura and to generate favorable Feng Shui.
According to Chinese belief, the roof of a building belongs to the spirit world and acts as a landing platform for
spirits to descend and ascend from our world. The deep and underlying reason for roof decoration of buildings,
temples, and palaces was to help this communication with the celestial world in order to attract in return good
fortune, protection and blessings.
(The tiger is one of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Those born in 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986,
and 1998, were born in the year of the tiger. (The next year of the tiger is 2010.)

- Age (if known): Vintage. Age unknown but an appraiser at an antique charity fund raiser told us he thought it was probably from the eary part of the 1900s, possibly a little earlier.
- Dimensions: about 10" wide, 10" high and 3.25" deep
