No Dustjacket From the Book....... Viceroy's Daughter tells about Carlota Esteben's arrival in Mexico, or New Spain as it was called at that time. She is the daughter of the Viceroy, who could be compared to a modern-day governor. When Carlota first arrives, she has mixed feelings about this new country. She remembers the gaiety of Old Spain and feels Mexico is a barren land.....Nevertheless, Carlota is eager to see her father again. Because the Viceroy is busy in Mexico City, the capital, he sends an escort to bring Carlota and her Aunt Maria overland to the city. During the trip, Carlota's aunt worries about the group's safety in passing through Indian territory. But Carlota's sympathizes with the Indians and can't believe the poor "savages" would do harm to the party......During the trip, Carlota and the rest of the travelers have some bad experiences with the Mexican Indians. Yet Carlota holds to her faith. And in the end, Carlota's faith is rewarded. It helps to build a bridge of understanding between the Spanish rulers and Indian natives.
