- Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Dazzler Pottery Meraz
-
The paint job on this pot is astounding! Imaginative and creative with fine line details. This pot was hand coiled, hand painted and hand fired and is unique and traditional in the Casa Grandes design. All paint designs are made using no measurements or sketches, but painted free-hand. This pot has a huge amount of fine line free-hand detail. Traditional geometric designs seem to almost jump off the polished black pottery walls. This pot is 5” tall and 4-3/4” wide and signed by the artist, Alfonso Meraz. The inspiration of Casa Grandes pottery is taken from Casa Grandes tradition. The renaissance of this beautiful pottery began in the early 1960s, following the Amerind Foundation’s excavation of the nearby Paquime ruins in 1958. Until that time, there was little interest in the antiquities of the area, but after the excavation, however, a new awareness developed. Technically and ascetically, Casa Grandes pottery equals or surpasses the work of the Indian potters of the American Southwest. It is made with clay from the mountains high above the village of Mata Ortiz, painted with human hair brushes and natural pigments (minerals and roots of plants). It is hand-formed, without the user of a potter’s wheel and is dung fired. We are proud to offer these hand-etched, hand-coiled clay pots. Each intricate line has been handpainted into gorgeous clay by hand. Beautiful workmanship, high gloss, and stone polished finish.
