THIS IS A VINTAGE RUSSIAN "LEZGI" DAGHESTAN CAUCASIAN RUG.
IT WAS MADE APPROXIMATELY 80 YEARS AGO (CIRCA 1930) IN DAGHESTAN.
This is an exceptional original KAZAK with some interesting facets to it, the vine leaf 'T' border is seen in remarkably few KAZAKs with an intertwining Caucasian stripe (I have only seen one other in Fabio Formenton's treatise 1972 on Oriental Rugs) It is well documented that true 'old' Kazak's are always wool on wool ie. the warp threads in construction as this is.
The three central medallions are "Lesgi star medallions", which is why I attribute this to 'LESGHI", these Lezghi medallions are of course remarkably similar to 'Selcuk Star Medallions" and may be also attributable to the movement of the Selcuk's through this area and onwards to Konya in the 11'th centuary.
An incredible example of Kazak weaving this rug is solidly constructed and its weight is a testiment to that. The colors are beautiful, bright and harmonious, just magnificent, the prospective owner will have a museum quality treasure.
Exact dimensions are 7' 2" X 4' 11".
This rug was only recently imported from Azerbaijan into the USA and has never been listed or advertised anywhere before, it came straight from the relatives of the family which made it.
