I took a break from the coding to do some graphic and color setup for TheBonz.com’s alpha page. I think it looks kinda funky, but would like opinions in case it might be a bit too funky.
You can see the work in progress at:
http://thebonz.com/alpha/real_directory.php
My next step is to create about 30 pages for each of the side bar categories, so I’m gonna take a bit of break before doing that.
The wire frames are still showing, all the border lines and place holders will fade away when I’m done.
Any commentary before the alpha becomes the live site are always appreciated.
Thanks,
eb

ps: the drop down menu works, the search is still indexing…

Hmmm, it’s been an hour and no ones told me it’s ugly yet, so maybe it’s not too bad :)

Hi Raz,
I checked it and the page looks really neat and Bonzy. I have just one teensy suggestion. Maybe you could make the yellow a bit less bright (at least in the descriptions) and it would be a little easier on the eyes.
I heard the color of legal pads is real good (that’s why they make ‘em that color.) I feel weird speaking in a vaccum, no other comments.
I am nearsighted and wear glasses and the top of the page looked really excellent and eye-catching, but well I scrolled down to the descriptions, I was like “Ouch!”
Great job, though! Overall it looks excellent! Please pat yourself on the back from me!

Well I think that mustard color is okay for the sides but the middle where everyone’s description is I think needs to be a lighter color that’s easier to read like light yellow, light green or tan…

Thanks for the comments so far, I’m gonna start working on the category pages then i’ll probably tweak the main background color a bit. I have my monitor set on the dark side of the brightness scale, so it might not be as harsh here as it is for you.
Back to work :)

I honestly don’t think the background color is working. I agree with frencheese that the mustard color would work on the sides. Having the solid color through the whole page makes it very difficult to read.
You might even want to use a gradient for the sides. Check out the top of this page how the banner goes from dark green under the logo in the bottom left corner to a lighter green in the top right where it says “Welcome back”. It is much more pleasing to the eye rather than having a solid color. I think it would be good if you did something similar down the sides from yellow to white (or a lighter yellow).
And I think you definitely need to use white in the background where the booth names and descriptions are. I think you should also make the booth description font smaller than the booth category and name. Maybe make the table skinnier, too (about the same width as the forums?). Just because you have screen space doesn’t mean you have to use it all. Direct the viewer’s eye where you want them to look.
I am trying to be helpful, so don’t take any of my criticism the wrong way. I am just voicing my opinions. In my opinion, right now it looks like blocks of text set to a mustard color background.
On the other hand, I really like the simplicity of your design. It is a great idea. I just feel that it needs to be more eye catching and easier to read.

I totally agree about the color being too hard on the eyes. Even a light yellow can be hard on those who have eye problems. For a large amount of text, as is shown here, black on white is always the best. But I DO like the size of the font. I am one of those who has pratically ruined my eyes staring at the PC for so long, and I am now finding it very difficult to read anything smaller than a 10 or 11 font size.
I do have a question though. when you say the Home Page, will this replace the current page that has the picture rotation? I sure hope not, because that is the greatest “moving billboard” I have ever seen online. It looks good. It is simple, and the photos catch ones attention, and it is like looking at a catalog. I LOVE IT.
What I see in this Alpha is very similar to BluJay’s home page, which I think is very boring. Too much text is a turn off for a Home page. IMHO.

@ parkerhouse… I didn’t mean to suggest making the overall font smaller. I just meant that there should be a difference in the font size between the booth name and the booth description. The booth name and link should be bigger than the booth description..

CR,
I hadn’t even read your post until after posting mine! LOL!
I agree with what you are saying about the variances in size. Needs to look like a magazine, which is why I like the Home page so much. I can see this Alpha being the Table of Contents and a second page behind the current Home Page.

Hi parker,
Raz is referring to the home page of theBonz.com, not Bonanzle.com. The Bonanzle.com home page isn’t changing anytime soon I think (except for the rotating pics anyway).

no probs, yqw. You’re right the Bonanzle home page is quite nice. Whenever I look at the homepage of average fleaBay wannabes, I usually get a word overload headache! lol

Sorry Raz, I’m no artist, nor do I have a good sense of color, and I love fresh ideas – but my eyes still hurt :)

Good morning and thanks for the comments.
I’m just waking back up, I passed out about a third of the way down the category menu making the subpages.
I know I have an odd taste in colors, I think I’m the only one in my town with a blaze orange front door, which is why I value others opinions when I make something for someone else and I think it looks ‘cool’ :)
re: the font size. I want to keep that bigish so it’s easy to read for us with ‘old eyes’. When the page is broken down by categories the large size will make more sense than seeing the whole directory at once.
I’ll work on a more pleasing background color than the greenish orange in a bit. Playing with colors is safer than coding while I’m still groggy. I plan on having the gradient of the best of the bonz pic fade into whatever the background color is, but the background will be solid and not a gradient itself. Maybe I’ll try a sand color like the background of the forum text here.
Well, time to start the coffee pot, walk the dog, then I’ll be back at it.

OK, I might have a solution that caters to both my desire for funkiness and your desire for readability.
In the Header in the “F” block there is now a dropdown that will let you choose the color for the site. The default is the funky orange, but you can easily change it to whichever color fits your eyes best (I’ll be replacing the way to dark colors with better ones shortly).
I just need to work out a POST / GET variable scheme to keep the color sticky when you change pages within the site. I had to hack up my style sheet a bit to make it work and am now calling the bgcolor in the header which reloads on each page refresh back to the default.
Oh, the text is now black too, which does look better.

I’ve redone the color scheme of TheBonz.com to a more neutral, less blinding background color and changed the The Best Of The Bonz banner to match.
Let me know if this scheme works better for your eyeballs, and if so I’ll lock it in and move on to other parts of the site development.
Also, the data entry page has been flushed and all the recorded imported into the Directory page.
Thanks,
eb

I love the colors of Bonangle, and the nature theme it suggests to me.
I’m thinking I will do a (I LOVE Bonanzle Mug) using the logo- I do one for all the other sites where I sell and they sell like crazy.
Wonder if they would have a problem with that?

Hi Betty,
I was discussing the new color scheme at
http://TheBonz.com
not Bonanzle’s colors.
TheBonz.com is a directory service that allows members to have a shorter and easier to spell web link directly to their booth.
http://TheBonz.com/Coins
is an example of a working link and http://TheBonz.com shows the entire directory of active members.
If you would like more info on what TheBonz.com is, you can check out:
http://TheBonz.com/GetTheBonz
for more details.
The old color scheme tended to cause blindness with some viewers, so I toned it down significantly and am looking for opinions before I lock it into the CSS file and move on to other parts of the sites development.
Thanks,
Eric
